When considering connection to the new sewer system, keep in mind the following:
- The cost of replacing your failing septic system can exceed the anticipated cost of connection to the new low-pressure sewer system.
- The increase in property value, once connected, can also exceed the estimated cost of connection.

THE COST TO ABANDON AN EXISTING SEPTIC TANK
Based on information gathered from local companies that perform this type of work, it is anticipated that the cost to decommission a residential septic tank will be between $400 to $800, depending on the size and number of tanks.
FINANCING
For those homeowners that are interested in financing the connection costs, the City of Tallahassee will provide low-interest financing at the same interest rate available to city residents for energy efficiency improvements. The payments would be added to your sewer bill.

PRICE INCREASES
It should be noted that since the time of the initial sewer system evaluation, prices have increased significantly from the original estimates. Several factors have contributed to this increase in cost; these primarily include increased fuel costs, materials costs, and labor costs.
These increases not only affect the fees to be charged by the plumbers for the installation of the grinder pumping systems, but also the fees charged by the City of Tallahassee that are assessed for the operation and maintenance of the sewer collection, transmission, treatment and disposal infrastructure. And while the City of Tallahassee has locked the sewer System Charge for Killearn Lakes Units I & II residents until September 30, 2007, the fee has already increased for other Leon County residents.
This new fee will be accessed to Killearn Lakes Units I & II residents that connect to the system after September 30, 2007.
